HMS Aldenham was one of 86 Royal Navy Hunt Class destroyers, named after Fox Hunts. (The Aldenham Hunt, later named the Aldenham Harriers, was formed in 1877 by George Gibbs, a cousin of the 1st Lord Aldenham.) HMS Aldenham was struck by a mine whilst on service in the Adriatic on December 14th, 1944. 126 crewmen lost their lives, only 63 men were rescued. HMS Aldenham lies on the seabed where it sank and is a War Grave. Every year, on the Sunday nearest to December 14th, a memorial service is held here in Aldenham church.
