The choir of St. John the Baptist, Aldenham have maintained the choral tradition of an Anglican parish church for well over 100 years. There are even copies of anthems in the music library dated Whitsunday 1899! It must be emphasised however, that none of the current choristers go back quite that far.
The choral tradition is very much a part of the fabric of the church even today in the 21st century. The choir sings at the two Sunday services every week, morning and evening. While the morning service varies between Book of Common Prayer Communion, Matins and Common Worship Holy Communion, together with variants for Baptisms and family themed services, the Evensong service is very much as would be heard in parish churches and cathedrals throughout much of England and the commonwealth. This represents a very strong commitment on the part of the choristers who give their time freely to choir practice aand two Sunday services week by week.
The cycle of life affects the choir just like other organisations, and at the moment, in 2005, we are nurturing a fledgling junior choir. The last junior choir was in its ascendency in the 1980's! New members are very welcome but auditions will become necessary to maintain the choral tradition.
Anyone interested in joining the choir should contact the vicar or the organist. Please see our Contact Us page.
